NATIONWIDE PROTESTS: NIGERIANS UNITE TO DEMAND CHANGE

The nationwide protests persist, with demonstrators taking to the streets in almost every state across the federation. United in their quest for change, the protesters vocally express their grievances and clearly articulate their demands, seeking meaningful reforms and accountability from the government.

The protesters have presented the following demands to the government:

Economic Reforms

1. Reverse fuel price to N190 (May 29, 2023 price)
2. Reverse electricity tariff to N60 (May 29, 2023 rate)
3. Prohibit further borrowing outside Nigeria
4. Stop funding religious pilgrims
5. Sell the Presidential Yacht

Government Transparency and Accountability

1. Create a website for government agencies to publish weekly income and spendings
2. Repeal the Inspector General of Police retirement/tenure extension
3. Amend the electoral act to include compulsory use of BVAS and electronic transmission of polling unit results

Public Servant Reforms

1. All elected and appointed officials should be on the same minimum wage as civil servants
2. Increase salaries of security personnel, health workers, and teachers by at least 35%
3. Prohibit public servants from flying out of Nigeria using government funds for personal business
4. All civil servants, elected and appointed public servants must educate their kids in Nigeria

Security Reforms

1. Withdraw security personnel attached to individuals and their property and send them to hot zones
2. Criminalize the use of brutal force on citizens by security agents

Political Reforms

1. Scrap the senate
2. Stop constituency projects for all lawmakers
3. Amend the Constitution to compel all electoral tribunal cases to be settled before the day of swearing-in

Other Reforms

1. Prohibit elected officials’ family members from using public assets without their presence
2. Prohibit government officials from flying first class
3. Limit the number of aides (SSA, Personal Assistant, and Personal Advisers) to 5
4. Prohibit spouses and children of Judges from contesting elections
5. Discontinue payment of allowances to elected and appointed officials (enroll them for NHIS)
6. Employ and post civil servants aides to government officials
