Indian Doctors Go on 24-Hour Strike, Demanding Justice and Safety After Brutal Murder
India’s Medical Community Unites in Protest After Brutal Murder of Young Doctor
The shocking rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata has sparked a nationwide outcry, with doctors and healthcare workers leading protests and strikes across India.
The victim’s body was found in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, prompting demands for improved campus security and a thorough investigation.
The Indian Medical Association has called for stricter laws to protect healthcare professionals and designated hospitals as safe zones. The police have arrested a suspect, but faced criticism for their handling of the case, leading to a CBI investigation.
In response, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) organized a nationwide strike, with multiple medical unions supporting the call. While emergency services remained operational, elective surgeries and OPD services were suspended across major cities.
The incident has ignited a national conversation about violence against women and the need for enhanced safety measures in healthcare settings.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) led a nationwide protest on Saturday, withdrawing services for 24 hours and suspending non-essential procedures, in response to the brutal murder of a young doctor in Kolkata. IMA chief R.V. Asokan called for national support, labeling the killing “barbaric” and urging a thorough overhaul of resident doctors’ working and living conditions.
Doctors across India demanded implementation of the Central Protection Act to safeguard healthcare workers from violence. Resident doctor Akanksha Tyagi joined protests in New Delhi, citing inadequate infrastructure and lack of safe resting spaces after long shifts.
The strike affected outpatient services, with many patients turned away at busy hospitals like Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia. The IMA and medical unions are pushing for change, seeking justice for the victim and improved working conditions for healthcare professionals.
